1992 Komiti Hauora established in seven East Coast communities; Matakaoa; Waiapu; Ruatorea; Tawhiti; Tokomaru Bay; Uawa and Gisborne
1994 November Working Party established which wrote the constitution for Ngati Porou Hauora to be established as an independent health provider for Ngati Porou
1995 Ngati Porou Hauora was constituted as an Incorporated Society and elections held were held 26 April for seven community representatives
1996 1 July – Hikurangi Community Clinics Trust GP services were integrated into NPH which brought the number of Community Health Centres to four and established the multi-disciplinary team with Kaiawhina as the vital link to whanau and communities
1997 February - Intense lobbying with Midland RHA hui at Rahui Marae and whanau/hapu/marae mandate established for NPH as health provider for Ngati Porou
1998 28 July - The secondary services at Te Puia hospital, the two Special Area GP clinics, mental health and dental services that were being delivered by the mainstream provider, Tairawhiti Healthcare, were sub-contracted to NPH. This brought the number of community health centres to six.
1999 1 January – A direct contract was signed with Health Funding Authority for NPH to deliver all the previously sub-contracted health services
17 November – Ministry of Health signed a Community Trusts Assistance Scheme deed which transferred the ownership of all land, buildings, assets and facilities on the East Coast north of Whangara, over to Ngati Porou Hauora.
2000 January –A new purpose built Matakaoa Community Health Centre building was opened in Te Araroa
1 July – Free GP consultations were made available to the whole of the East Coast due to a new service contract negotiated with the Health Funding Authority
4 September – The first urban Community Health Centre was opened in Kaiti Mall, Gisborne, named Puhi Kaiti, which brought the number of community health centres to seven. GP consultations were $5 and are now $10
2002 1 October- Ngati Porou Hauora became a Primary Care Organisation with four partners; Te Aitanga A Hauiti Oranga Whanau, a health promotion provider; Pacific Islands Community Trust, a social service provider; Nga Maia Midwives; Tracey Walker Physiotherapist
1 November – Second urban Community Health Centre was opened in Lytton West, Gisborne, named Te Whanau A Iwi, which brought the number of community health centres to eight. GP consultations are $10
2003 Two new partners joined the NPH – PHO; Plunket, a well-child provider, and Employ Health, an independent occupational nursing practice
New Gisborne premises were leased to house Research projects, Mental Health Advocate, a Rehabilitation programme, Problem Gambling Counsellor and the Tairawhiti Innovative Nursing Team.
A new Board member position was created as a second representative for Gisborne city
2004 Hikurangi Community Clinics Trust dis-established and transferred ownership of their two buildings in Tokomaru Bay and Ruatorea to Ngati Porou Hauora
- Honorary Doctorate conferred on Dr Paratene Ngata. MOU signed with Otago University. Treaty claim lodged with Waitangi Tribunal. Te Whare Hauora now owned by Ngati Porou Hauora albeit subject to Treaty claims over whenua. Joint winners of Whanau Ora and Te Matarau awards as Maori Provider of the year, with individual staff members also receiving awards.
- 5 year strategic plan for Ngati Porou Hauora from 2006 – 2011 complete and awaiting final community consultation. Problem Gambling team achieved national recognition for ‘sinking lid’ policy and programmes.
2007 Ngati Porou Hauora in collaboration with Otago University won Te Kohu Kahukura 2006 Whanau Ora National Award celebrating achievements of the providers Maori health and disability services throughout Aotearoa.
2008 Farewell to Georgina Paerata after a long and illustrious career in health to Ngati Porou and Ngati Porou Hauora.
Many projects under development toward completion including Tikitiki Community Health Centre, Refurbishment of Dental Clinic, Uawa social housing project, Telepharmacy for Coast Community health centres, replacement of radiology equipment and branding of ‘Nati & Healthy’ aligned and incorporated into our health service provision. |
